Ihtisham Kabir designed software in Silicon Valley for over two decades before returning to Bangladesh where he works as a photographer, writer and rubber planter. His weekly column Tangents, comprising photographs and personal essays, has run non-stop for over ten years in The Daily Star every Saturday. The column is usually on nature; other topics include photography, books, science, travel and memoirs.
Ihtisham has been a passionate photographer for 35 years and taught fine-art black and white printing at University of California's extension program in San Francisco during the 1980s and 1990s. He has photographed people and nature in Bangladesh extensively. His most recent interest is in photographing the birds of Bangladesh.
Using his photographs and essays, he has made six books on Bangladesh (1. Sundarban: A Photographic Journey, 2. Chasing Paradise, 3. Sylhet, 4. Colours of Bangladesh, 5. Pakhi: Beautiful Birds of Bangladesh and 6. Exploring Sundarban.) He designs his own books. The printing press Progressive Printers prints Ihtisham's books under his close guidance to attain superlative quality.
With over 11,000 followers Ihtisham is active on Instagram under the name "ihtishamkabir".
In his previous life, after a BS (with Distinction) in Electrical Engineering from Cornell, and a MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering from University of California, Davis, Ihtisham worked as a software engineer in Silicon Valley. His engineering career included a 15-year stint at Sun Microsystems where he assembled Sun's digital imaging team and built imaging software for the Java environment. He wrote an engineering reference book on digital imaging algorithms (High Performance Computer Imaging, Prentice-Hall/Manning) and holds several patents on fast implementation of common imaging operations.
Ihtisham also makes customized books for selected clients, from concept to design, layout, editing and production. The Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dhaka commissioned him to design, edit and produce a pictorial book on its 110-year history.
